Falconry is truly an ancient sport practiced well before the birth of Christ. The first record of falconry was discovered by Sir Henry Layard in the 18th century. A bas relief depicting a falconer was found in the Khrsabad ruins (1700 BC) in Mesopotamia.

Modern day falconry has changed only slightly from the ancients methods. The techniques have been handled down over the centuries either through reading of the old books and from tutoring by masters of the sport to their apprentices. Most of the falconry equipment has stayed the same, but modern day falconer are constantly inventing new ideas for the sport.

Falconry is practiced today by very devoted people who enjoy training and flying their birds, whether in hunting game or just exercising them. This sport does demand many extra hours of their spare time. It is a 365-day-a-year regimen of training and caring for their birds.

In the past, the sport of falconry has not been totally understood here in North America. But through public education falconry is finally getting the recognition it deserves as a field sport and people are finding out more and more about this exciting sport.
